Synopsis and Discussion
Late afternoon cloud cover on Sunday helped keep local ozone levels at bay after a fast run-up during the a.m. period. Considerable cloud cover currently over the Valley is showing signs of thinning out with some clearing to the east. With a relatively light wind regime present today and with hourly ozone concentrations at most monitoring sites in the 35 to 50 parts per billion range as of 9:00 a.m., rapid increases in ozone levels are possible once full sun is realized; today's Ozone Health Watch will therefore remain in effect. An upper level anticyclonic circulation center is forecast to remain situated near the Four Corners region thru at least Friday. The resulting moist easterly flow is expected to result in active monsoon weather over much of AZ thru this forecast period. While on the one hand local easterly to light gradient wind conditions will be highly conducive to ozone accumulation, on the other hand hard-to-predict cloud cover will hinder ozone production. For now will keep predicted ozone levels above the mid-moderate range of the Air Quality Index but below Health Watch criteria. Thunderstorm outflow boundary/downdraft/microburst winds are possible each day as will be the potential for areas of dense blowing dust. -Reith
