Wildfire Smoke Forecast

Mescal and Telegraph Fires

Overview

*NOTE: This will be the last smoke forecast for the Telegraph Fire.

The Telegraph Fire is now approximately 180,690 acres, growing only about 120 acres yesterday. The eastern portion of the fire was active, with scattered interior pockets of burning, and it's where the additional perimeter growth occurred. A light plume of smoke could be seen on satellite moving to the east-southeast in the afternoon. Impacts were mostly light yesterday, with brief periods of moderate impacts noted in Peridot and Fort Thomas.

Smoke Synopsis

So far this morning, the fire has not appeared very active. Monitors for this fire also suggest light impacts, at most, to areas adjacent to and east of the fire. And if there is a haze in the area, it's likely from the Backbone Fire (west of Strawberry), which was active yesterday.

Winds at the fire will be breezy and out of the west-northwest today, and transport winds will be out of the northwest. Therefore, any smoke this fire produces will move off to the east-southeast or southeast throughout the day. Then, as before, winds will become light later in the evening and overnight. Any smoke from smoldering will settle into local drainages, and impacts to adjacent areas should be mostly light. During the day, San Carlos and Safford could continue to see smoke overhead, but impacts at the surface are forecast to be light.

Thunderstorm activity is not expected over eastern Arizona this afternoon.

Then for tomorrow, winds near the fire are forecast to be breezy and out of the northwest. However, transport winds are forecast to be a bit weaker. Any additional smoke from the fire should disperse to the southeast, then maybe south. Once again, smoke impacts should remain mostly light throughout the day and overnight.

For the Pinnacle Fire (west of Safford) a smoke forecast is available here.
