Site will be removed from Arizona's Water Quality Assurance Revolving Fund (WQARF) Registry

PHOENIX (June 29, 2018) -- The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) completed remedial action for polluted soil and a groundwater plume in Phoenix, Ariz. Known as the 38th Street and Indian School Road Site, it is located between 38th and 35th Streets, bounded by Indian School Road to the north and East Piccadilly Road to the south. The soil and groundwater were polluted with tetrachloroethene (PCE), which was commonly used in dry cleaning.

The 38th Street and Indian School Road Site is part of the Water Quality Assurance Revolving Fund (WQARF) and has been part of the Registry, which lists active sites, since 1998. With no additional remedial action necessary, the 38th Street and Indian School Road Site will be removed from the WQARF Registry. This follows the removal of another WQARF Site in the same area last year.

"It is exciting to see a second site removed from the registry. ADEQ has tirelessly worked on this effort. To see the technological advancements over the years and their impact on these sites has been fascinating,” said Jolene Morris, a member of the Community Advisory Board for WQARF Sites in this area. “ADEQ and their community outreach has kept the community and committee informed of each advance and success. Congratulations on one more closure."

When PCE is present in soil, the pollutant can make its way into the groundwater. Prior to being listed on the WQARF Registry, a soil vapor extraction (SVE) system was used to remediate PCE in soil. This was removed from the Site in 2003. In 2016, two groundwater monitors were installed at the Site, with sampling confirming PCE remained in the water. The following year, three in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) injections occurred at these wells. ISCO is employed in environmental remediation projects to reduce pollutant concentrations. Follow-up water sampling indicated cleanup levels were achieved.
