PHOENIX (Jan. 11, 2012) - The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality will be co-sponsor of a Saturday, Jan. 28 event at 9 a.m. along the Santa Cruz River in Rio Rico to clean up trash sites north of Nogales.

Other co-sponsors of the event are Friends of the Santa Cruz River, Anza Trail Coalition, Rio Rico Properties and Santa Cruz County. Many volunteers are needed and are asked to meet at the Rio Rico ballpark parking lot on Pendleton Road, one mile south of Rio Rico Drive, and a carpool will transport workers to the site.

"Border trash is a serious environmental problem throughout Arizona's boundary with Mexico, especially in riparian areas, and I welcome this much-needed volunteer effort along the Santa Cruz River," ADEQ Director Henry Darwin said.

ADEQ workers have been involved in a number of trail cleanups in the border region in recent years, including other cleanups in the Santa Cruz, the Arivaca region northwest of Nogales, the Colorado River area south of Yuma, arroyos near Douglas and in the Coronado National Forest near Sierra Vista and Green Valley.

Gloves, trash bags, tools, water and snacks will be provided for volunteers, who are asked to bring a hat and work shoes.
