ADEQ Announces High School Recycling Scholarship Winners

PHOENIX (March 24, 2009) - The Arizona Department of Environmental
Quality announced today that nine $1,000 scholarships under the
department's Recycling Scholarship Program have been awarded to Arizona
high school seniors throughout the state.

The winners and the schools they attend are:

* Genevieve Andersen, Sinagua High School, Flagstaff
* Kayla DeRosa, Sinagua High School, Flagstaff
* Nashonna Frank, Westwood High School, Mesa
* Mari Hanchar, Desert Mountain High School, Scottsdale
* Julia King, San Carlos High School, San Carlos
* Meghan Morris, Hamilton High School, Chandler
* Christian Pettersen, Mingus Union High School, Cottonwood
* Melissa Rankin, Red Mountain High School, Mesa
* Victoria Tulk, Rio Rico High School, Rio Rico

Each of these students will receive the scholarship to be used for
expenses at a college or university in Arizona. The scholarship
recipients were selected by ADEQ based on the proposals they submitted
to ADEQ outlining a waste reduction or recycling project in their school
or community that they will implement during April.

"We are so happy to be able to offer scholarships to students with such
innovative ideas about how to recycle and protect the environment," Gov.
Jan Brewer said.

"From planting trees to setting up recycling bins to encouraging
supermarkets to offer reusable bags, we saw some great ideas for
recycling projects that we are pleased to recognize," said ADEQ Acting
Director Patrick J. Cunningham.

The scholarship program is funded by the ADEQ Recycling Grant Program.
