ADEQ and NFL to Plant Trees at Valley Schools to Mark "Green" Super Bowl
XLII
PHOENIX (Jan. 18, 2007) - As part of its efforts to make Super Bowl XLII
the greenest ever, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality will
sponsor the planting of 42 trees at seven Valley elementary schools next
week.
"This urban forestry project is part of what will be the greenest Super
Bowl ever," ADEQ Director Steve Owens said. "The NFL and the Super Bowl
Host Committee share Gov. Janet Napolitano's commitment to addressing
the problem of climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
This is a terrific project."
On Tuesday, Jan. 22 plantings will take place at:
* 9 a.m.: Canyon Breeze Elementary, 11675 W. Encanto Blvd.,
Avondale
* 10:30 a.m.: Desert Oasis Elementary, 8802 W. McDowell Road,
Phoenix
* 12:30 p.m.: Hurley Ranch Elementary, 8950 W. Illini Street,
Tolleson
* 2 p.m.: Dos Rios Elementary, 2150 S. 87th Ave., Tolleson
On Friday, Jan 25 plantings will take place at:
* 9 a.m.: Royal Palm Middle School, 8520 N 19th Ave., Phoenix
(Director Owens and NFL, Arizona Cardinals and Arizona Super Bowl Host
Committee dignitaries will be in attendance.)
* 12:30 p.m.: Alfred F. Garcia School, 1441 S 27th Ave., Phoenix
* 2 p.m.: Lowell School, 1121 S 3rd Ave., Phoenix
Super Bowl XLII will be played Sunday, Feb. 3 at University of Phoenix
Stadium in Glendale.
ADEQ and the NFL are working to reduce the "carbon footprint" of Super
Bowl XLII. ADEQ and the NFL also will be planting thousands of trees on
84 acres of Arizona forest in the burn area of the Rodeo-Chediski fire.
That tree-planting effort is geared to help offset the greenhouse gas
emissions produced by the game and surrounding events.
Schools for the tree-planting project were selected based on suitability
as a planting site, a need for trees on the campus and the ability to
water and care for the trees.
