ADEQ Director Owens Announces Plan To Open New Vehicle Emission
Inspection Station in North Phoenix
PHOENIX (Oct. 19, 2007) - Arizona Department of Environmental Quality
(ADEQ) Director Steve Owens announced today that ADEQ plans to open a
new vehicle emissions inspection (VEI) station on Deer Valley Road to
serve the rapidly growing North Phoenix area.
The new VEI station, located at 501 W. Deer Valley Road, will open in
January 2009 when the department's new contract with Gordon-Darby, Inc.
goes into effect.
The opening will coincide with the closing of an underutilized north
Phoenix VEI station, located at 15349 N. 40th Street. That station is
located in a commercial shopping center and is surrounded by a
residential area, where complaints have been frequent about the noise it
generates.
"This new station will make it easier and more convenient for those who
live or work north of Bell Road and in other parts of North Phoenix to
get their cars inspected," Director Owens said. "In addition to being
conveniently located, the station will have shorter wait times as well
as programmable signs with updated information on wait times."
The new, three-lane inspection station will be located near Loop 101 and
Interstate 17 and is expected to handle more than half of the current
motorists using the 40th Street VEI station along with those who live
and work farther north. It is expected to handle 80,000 inspections
annually.
Each inspection lane will have the capability to perform all types of
emissions inspections including two on-board diagnostic (OBD)
inspections simultaneously. The station will be able to quickly and
efficiently inspect both conventional- and OBD-equipped vehicles.
"We want to make sure that people in the North Valley get the service
they need and deserve," Owens said.
