ADEQ Director Owens Awards $582,253 in Grants for Water Quality
Improvement in Yavapai County
PHOENIX (June 22, 2007) - Arizona Department of Environmental Quality
(ADEQ) Director Steve Owens today announced that the department has
awarded $582,253 in grants to fund water quality improvement in Yavapai
County.
Under a $483,191 grant, the Prescott Creeks Preservation Association
will protect the 126-acre Watson Woods Riparian Preserve, which is all
that remains of a 1,000-acre stretch of unbroken forest. The association
also will receive another $99,062 grant for a second phase of
improvements downstream from Granite Creek in Prescott.
Both projects will plant vegetation, create wetlands and stabilize
channels to reduce erosion and redirect and filter stormwater runoff
into Granite Creek, which flows into the preserve.
"These funds will help protect the watershed near Prescott," Director
Owens said. "We are pleased to support this important local effort."
The grants are funded with federal dollars provided to ADEQ under the
Clean Water Act.
