ADEQ Director Owens Announces $200,509.92 in Community Recycling Grants
for Graham County
PHOENIX - Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Director
Steve Owens announced today that ADEQ has awarded $200,509.92 to fund
recycling in Graham County.
The Gila Watershed Partnership of Arizona will receive $99,000 to remove
120 tons of automobiles from the solid waste stream. The program will
identify abandoned vehicles, obtain titles, tow the vehicles to a
salvage yard, remove hazardous fluids and parts containing hazardous
material and hire a salvage company to crush and recycle the metal. The
Partnership will work with Graham County and the City of Safford on this
project.
Also, the Graham County Rehabilitation Center in Safford was awarded
$79,309.92 to expand recycling to newspaper, plastics and electronics.
The Center will use the funding to purchase bailers, material collection
boxes and bins and a lift gate addition to the existing forklift and
truck. The Center will partner with the City of Safford to distribute
recycling fliers to residents.
These grants are part of ADEQ's Waste Reduction Assistance (WRA) grants
program, which funds projects devoted to waste reduction, recycling and
composting.
In addition, the Graham County Rehabilitation Center will receive
$22,200 to buy radio advertisements to encourage residents to recycle.
This grant is part of ADEQ's Waste Reduction Initiative through
Education (WRITE), which supports information and education projects
that encourage recycling, reuse and source reduction and increases
awareness of proper solid waste disposal techniques.
"Recycling is one of our most effective tools to protect our
environment," Owens said. "We are glad to support Graham County's
efforts to increase recycling in Arizona."
