Synopsis and Discussion
A large upper level trough and surface cold front in the mid-latitude
storm track were moving toward the metro area this a.m. Wind gusts up
to 40 mph produced periods of blowing dust (PM-10) between 7:00 and
10:00 a.m. with visibilities as low as five miles in some areas. The
highest hourly concentration was 707.1ug/m3 at the West Chandler
monitoring site at 7:00 a.m. Fortunately, rain showers began over the
Valley by 8:00 a.m. and are forecast to persist thru at least
mid-afternoon. This should lower 24-hour average PM-10 levels for Monday
to the mid-moderate range of the Air Quality Index as forecast. In the
wake of this system at least two additional but weaker systems are
forecast to move over the western U.S. during the remainder of the work
week. Although these disturbances are expected to remain mostly north
of the Phoenix metro area, it will be breezy during the afternoon hours
which, along with below average high temperatures, should help suppress
local ozone production. -Reith
