Synopsis and Discussion
*A PM-10 HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR TODAY*
Tight gradients associated with the approach of a strong but mostly dry
upper level trough and surface cold front are bringing strong and gusty
winds - up to 45 mph - to the Phoenix metro area this a.m. These winds
have managed to generate areas of significant
blowing/transported/suspended dust over much of the Valley and will
continue to do so into the afternoon hours. Thru 10:00 a.m. highest
hourly PM-10 (coarse particle) concentrations include 601.6ug/m3 at the
West Chandler monitoring site, 247.3ug/m3 at Higley, 203.1ug/m3 at West
Forty Third, and 198.2ug/m3 at Durango. These readings have prompted the
issuance of a PM-10 Health Watch that will remain in effect until
midnight. In the wake of this system a high-amplitude ridge aloft will
build over the Phoenix metro area Tuesday and Wednesday. Residual
suspended dust may cause PM-10 readings to remain elevated on Tuesday;
otherwise, good air quality is expected. A strong warming trend will
ensue on Wednesday with afternoon highs expected to be in the lower 80's
into the weekend. This, along with relatively light winds and
decreasing cloud cover, will encourage local ozone levels to rise into
the low-moderate range of the Air Quality Index. -Reith
