Health message for Tuesday, September 28: Unusually sensitive people
should consider reducing prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors.
Synopsis and Discussion
A very large and strong upper level ridge will be over the western U.S.
including AZ thru this forecast period. Meanwhile, a weak westward
moving disturbance over Sonora Mexico will continue to spread some
cloudiness over mainly southern AZ the next few days. A relatively
light to easterly wind regime that is expected to occur over the Valley
from Tuesday thru Thursday will combine with mostly sunny skies and
near-record afternoon heat to produce a situation conducive to higher
ozone levels. Even so, increasingly shorter days and lower sun angles
should make it difficult for highest concentrations to rise much above
the mid-moderate range of the Air Quality Index. The same weather
conditions will also result in a rather stagnant air mass over the metro
area at times with overnight inversion formation likely. This in turn
will promote some high hourly PM-10 readings - mainly adjacent to the
Salt River channel - during the morning and evening hours; however,
24-hour average concentrations will be well below critical levels.
