Synopsis and Discussion
In the wake of Tuesday's dry cold frontal passage, overnight lows in the Valley were in the 40's this a.m. and a moderate (3-4 deg C) surface-based radiation inversion formed that reached to over 1800'. This and a light wind regime contributed to another round of elevated hourly particle pollution concentrations that included 151.8ug/m3 of PM-10 (coarse) at the West Forty Third monitoring site, 117.7ug/m3 at Buckeye, 105.4ug/m3 at Durango, and 83.0ug/m3 at South Phoenix. Durango also had 20.2ug/m3 of PM-2.5 (fine). Even so, the current synoptic weather pattern that features a large and deep trough in the mid-latitude storm track over the western U.S., still favors mostly good air quality in the short term - especially with additional embedded disturbances moving over the state on Thursday and again on Saturday. The good news is that although overnight inversion formation and particle pollution levels may increase on Friday as warmer air aloft moves overhead between systems, there will continue to be a low risk for unhealthy concentrations of particle pollution over a 24-hour period. The bad news is that no rainfall is expected in the metro area for at least the next 10 days. -Reith
