Health message for Wednesday, November 3: No health impacts are expected.
Synopsis and Discussion
High pressure will be in control the next few days, pushing afternoon desert temperatures near or slightly above 90°F Tuesday and Wednesday. An approaching trough will shove the ridge of high pressure to the east a bit, weakening both features. The ridge, however, will remain strong enough to force the trough north of Arizona this weekend. We could see some breezy conditions Saturday, but no rain is expected. The biggest impact will be cooler temperatures, with highs in the Valley dropping back to the lower 80s Saturday and Sunday. This will still be a few degrees above normal for this time of year.
Air Quality levels continue to be in the GOOD range for all pollutants. Because of the unusually strong ridge, inversions have been able to break early and mixing heights have risen enough to allow good vertical mixing of trapped overnight pollution. As high pressure weakens and moves slightly east Thursday and Friday, we could see PM10 and/or PM2.5 concentrations nudge higher into the low MODERATE category of the Air Quality Index (AQI). Increase breezes Saturday and Sunday should help clear the air a bit, improving air quality in the Valley of the Sun.
Check back tomorrow for the latest. Until then, have a good day! -J.Paul
