Synopsis and Discussion
Rather stagnant over the metro area this a.m. with a moderate (4-5 deg C) surface based inversion that formed overnight and mostly light winds. This situation contributed to a few elevated hourly particle pollutant levels including 124.0ug/m3 of PM-10 (coarse particles) and 20.6ug/m3 of PM-2.5 (fine particles) at the Durango monitoring site at 7:00 a.m. A strong ridge aloft will build over AZ from the west the next few days. At the same time, a fairly strong trough will develop over Texas. The low-level gradient between these two features will bring increasingly strong and at times gusty easterly winds to all of southern AZ including the Phoenix metro area by Wednesday. These winds are currently forecast to peak over and upstream from the Valley late Wednesday thru early Thursday, and some blowing/transported/suspended dust is possible; however, 24-hour average PM-10 levels should remain well below critical levels. Concentrations of all other air pollutants are forecast to remain in the good range of the Air Quality Index. -Reith
