Synopsis and Discussion
Elevated to high ozone levels were omnipresent over AZ on Wednesday with all monitoring site locations from Yuma to Phoenix and Flagstaff to Tucson reporting concentrations from the low to upper moderate range of the Air Quality Index. Wind flow patterns were not conducive to transport of ozone and its precursors from CA yesterday, and the Joshua Tree National Park ozone monitor recorded readings in the good range of the AQI. This means that conditions were ideal for locally produced ozone over a wide area of the state. The large upper level trough that has been positioned to the northwest of AZ all week will move east and weaken the next few days. Strengthening low-level gradients associated with this movement will produce an increase in Valley winds this afternoon and again on Friday. A recent Sky Harbor Airport ACARS sounding indicated southwesterly winds aloft of 20-30 mph at and above the 5K' level; with a predicted mixed layer of 7500' today some of this momentum should reach the surface this afternoon. Although local ozone production will remain efficient, ozone accumulation will be disrupted - hence a major drop in concentrations is forecast except over the far northeast Valley. A lighter wind regime is advertised to return over the weekend and ozone readings may rebound significantly. -Reith
