Synopsis and Discussion
Elevated to high ozone levels were present over the entire metro area again on Sunday with the health standard narrowly missed at the monitor in Dysart. Thankfully, a significant change in local weather conditions should prevent a recurrence - at least temporarily. A vigorous but dry upper level trough and surface cold front will approach AZ from the northwest today, weaken as it passes overhead on Tuesday, and exit the area on Wednesday. A modest increase in winds, marked cooling, and considerable high cloudiness can be expected from this system. Winds, cloud cover, and cooling should all help to curtail ozone production and accumulation; however, low-level winds are now configured to be conducive for the transport of additional ozone and/or its precursors from CA as early as Tuesday afternoon and continuing on Wednesday. Thus a rapid return to high ozone levels is possible by Wednesday. Some areas of blowing dust are also possible during the afternoon hours today and Tuesday but the PM-10 (coarse particle) standard is not in jeopardy. -Reith
