Synopsis and Discussion
*TODAY'S OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN EXTENDED THRU FRIDAY MAY 14*
Despite temporary but extensive high cloudiness over the metro area, some local ozone concentrations were increasing in a major way this a.m. Between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. five Valley monitoring sites recorded hourly increases in ozone of 10-19 parts per billion. With high clouds expected to thin and/or diminish by afternoon, strong sunlight will take over with efficient ozone production expected - assuming sufficient precursors are present. In addition, a recent ACARS sounding from Sky Harbor indicated that winds aloft are <10 mph all the way up to the 11K' level with a deep easterly component - meaning that this situation is highly conducive to ozone accumulation as well. Little if any transport of additional ozone or its precursors from CA is indicated thru the weekend, so the ozone that does form will primarily be locally produced. Since similar weather conditions are advertised for Friday and Saturday, the current Ozone Health Watch has been extended. -Reith
