Synopsis and Discussion
It appears that the Valley may be in for a string of days with relatively good air quality. The warm ridge aloft currently over AZ will be pushed to the east by this afternoon as an unusually large and persistent upper level trough for this time of year begins to amplify over the west coast and eventually AZ. As a result, afternoon winds due to strong daytime heating in the Phoenix metro area will be enhanced by increasing low-level gradients by Thursday with highest winds expected on Friday. Some areas of blowing dust are possible then but a significant blowing dust event is unlikely. The same winds will have a suppressive effect on local ozone accumulation. Winds aloft upstream will have a south to southwesterly component, and should not be conducive to the transport of ozone or its precursors from CA any time soon. The above circumstances are expected to keep concentrations of all air pollutants in the good to low-moderate range of the Air Quality Index thru at least this forecast period. -Reith
