Synopsis and Discussion
Despite hot afternoon temperatures under sunny skies, local maximum ozone readings came in much lower than expected over the weekend. Since weather conditions were conducive to high ozone generation, it appears that the chemical constituents of ozone (precursors) were not present in sufficient quantities and/or combination to keep ozone formation going. Concentration graphing indicates that most monitoring sites peaked during the early afternoon and decreased thereafter. This is not unusual this time of year since precursor-poor air from open desert areas becomes drawn over the metro area on southwesterly afternoon winds. This cycle can continue uninterrupted for many days unless and until additional precursors arrive. As it so happens, latest forecast products are advertising that winds in the 5-10K' layer will become more conducive to the transport of precursors from CA by Tuesday morning. Thus, a significant jump in ozone levels is possible tomorrow - especially over the northeast and east Valley. All other air pollutants are forecast to remain in the good range of the Air Quality Index. -Reith
