Health message for Tuesday December 14: Unusually sensitive people
should consider reducing prolonged or heavy exertion.
Synopsis and Discussion
Hourly PM-10 (coarse particle) concentrations raced higher this a.m. as
weekday emission-causing activities resumed. Highest levels included
509.6ug/m3 at the Buckeye monitoring site, 200.3ug/m3 at West Forty
Third, 161.6ug/m3 at Durango, 136.1ug/m3 at Greenwood, and 120.3ug/m3 at
West Phoenix. Highest PM-2.5 (fine particle) readings occurred at
Durango with 38.1 and 33.5 ug/m3 at 7:00 and 6:00 a.m., respectively.
These concentrations were dwarfed by the 120ug/m3 that occurred at West
Phoenix at 6:00 p.m. yesterday and, when combined with other high PM-2.5
levels, is clear evidence that despite the COUNTY NO BURN DAY smoke was
in abundance in some areas. The stagnant air mass currently over the
metro area will continue thru Tuesday with some relief in sight by
Wednesday as a southern branch of the mid-latitude storm track becomes
established at out latitude. Increased winds and cooler temperatures
aloft should yield improved dispersion and there is even a chance of
showers on Thursday. -Reith
