Health message for Wednesday, December 8: Unusually sensitive people should consider limiting prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors.
Synopsis and Discussion
Weather conditions will persist through the weekend with high pressure in control of the southwestern U.S. Afternoon highs will be in the 70s through much of next week, about 5-7 degrees above normal for this time of year. There is no rain in site for at least the next two weeks.
Air quality improved slightly Monday thanks to the disturbance that brought clouds and better mixing to the region. Fewer fireplaces in action the first part of the week helps to reduce the amount of pollution in the Valley. Ventilation is forecast to decrease the next several days. With strong morning inversions, lower mixing heights and little to no surface winds to move the air, expect particulate concentrations to steadily increase as we head towards the weekend. Throw in a boost in fireplace activity Friday through Sunday and we could be looking at levels pushing the health standard once again.
We'll have more for you tomorrow. Until then, have a good day! -J.Paul
