Synopsis and Discussion
Breaks in the cloud cover on Monday contributed to much more local ozone
production than expected, and relatively light winds assisted with ozone
accumulation. The result: a couple of ozone monitoring sites managed to
record max concentrations just above the mid-moderate range of the Air
Quality Index. With even less cloud cover this a.m. ozone levels have
already climbed above those of 24 hours ago at a few locations.
However, with high monsoon moisture levels and more sunshine, convective
clouds will form rapidly by this afternoon and steering winds will be
favorable for moving thunderstorms from the east and southeast toward
the metro area by mid-afternoon. For this reason do not feel that a
major upward revision in today's forecasted ozone concentrations, i.e.,
a Health Watch, is warranted. A better than average chance for dense
blowing dust between Casa Grande and Phoenix also seems plausible, so
another brief round of high PM-10 (coarse particle) concentrations may
occur over mainly the southeast Valley later today. With lots of monsoon
activity expected by this evening, considerable cloud debris is a likely
outcome for a.m. Wednesday.
