Synopsis and Discussion
A PM-10 HEALTH WATCH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL MIDNIGHT

An upper level trough in the mid-latitude storm track - unusually strong
for this time of year - will move over AZ from the northwest the next
few days and eventually unwind over most of the U.S. by Saturday. In the
near-term strong gusty winds, suspended/transported/blowing dust, and
plummeting temperatures will be the principal impacts for the Phoenix
metro area. Sustained winds in the 5-10K' layer over the Valley are
advertised to increase all day and peak within the 47-52 mph range by
11:00 p.m. Since a surface cold front is forecast to arrive shortly
thereafter, some of this momentum may reach the surface and cause gusty
winds thru the overnight hours over parts of the metro area. Since there
is the potential for lingering suspended dust from Wednesday being added
to by additional blowing dust early Thursday, PM-10 (coarse particle)
levels may remain elevated to high for a lengthy period of time. In
addition, by 5:00 a.m. Thursday low-level winds will be highly conducive
to ozone and precursor transport from CA and a significant jump in ozone
levels is possible - an event seen on numerous occasions in the past.
Thus, Valley air quality could be significantly degraded by the combined
effects of both ozone and PM-10 on Thursday.
