Health message for Friday, April 23: No health impacts are expected.

Synopsis and Discussion
Clouds persist across the Phoenix forecast area Thursday as the center of the trough of low pressure is now over Las Vegas. Some breaks in the clouds from time to time will all additional energy from the sun to heat the surface which could result in a few desert thunderstorms later Thursday afternoon. A slight chance for showers exists through early Friday before clearing from the west ensues. Amounts, if any, are aren't expected to be significant.

Temperatures will struggle to get out of the 60s today, increasing to the mid 70s on Friday under partly cloudy skies and mostly light winds. As high pressure strengthens, temperatures will climb into the 80s and eventually lower 90s by Sunday and Monday.

Strong winds associated with the passing cold front Wednesday did kick up some localized dust across the deserts, but only one PM10 monitor (West 43rd) registered "Moderate" levels. In fact, those levels were very close to exceeding the health standard for the 24-hr period. The next highest concentrations were at the Durango monitor a few miles to the northeast in downtown Phoenix. Otherwise, all other pollutants were in the "Good" range.

Over the next several days, we will likely see ozone concentrations return to the "Moderate" range as high pressure leads to unimpeded sunshine, light winds, and very warm temperatures.

We'll have a more detailed look at the weekend's weather and resulting air quality tomorrow. Until then, have a good day! -J.Paul
