Synopsis and Discussion
Twelve ozone monitors in Maricopa, Gila, and Pinal Counties reached the low "Moderate" category of the Air Quality Index (AQI) on Wednesday. Similar but slightly higher levels are forecast across the Valley the next few days as high pressure strengthens and moves east through Arizona. Afternoon desert temperatures will climb into the mid to upper 80s Thursday through Sunday under mostly sunny skies and relatively light winds. The ridge of high pressure will be helped along by a strong trough of low pressure developing off the coast of California. As the trough approaches, winds will increase out of the south and southwest across the forecast area late Sunday afternoon. Earlier models had this trough digging far enough south to tap into sub tropical moisture, enhancing our chances for Valley rain. The latest run this morning is still holding to that possibility, but lowering the rainfall amounts. Time will tell.
Air quality will remain fairly unchanged through Saturday and Sunday, with ozone concentrations in the lower "Moderate" range and PM10 and PM2.5 levels staying in the "Good" category.
Check back on Friday for a closer look at your weekend's weather and air quality. Until then, have a good day! -J.Paul
