Synopsis and Discussion
The mid-latitude storm track remains highly amplified and a 120-knot polar front jet max will drive a rather cold air mass over the western U.S. the next 48 hours. Thus, the first significant - but dry - upper level trough and surface cold frontal passage of the season is expected to occur in the local forecast area mid-week. Forecasted high temperatures for the metro area are as much as 20 degrees lower for Thursday than those for today. Locally very breezy winds will begin by late afternoon Tuesday ahead of the system, and peak during the mid-afternoon hours on Wednesday. There is an increased risk for elevated PM-10 levels on Wednesday due to areas of blowing dust - a PM-10 Health Watch is possible - but unhealthy concentrations do not appear likely at this time. The first trough passage of Fall 2008 that occurred on October 11 featured 67 mph winds at the 10K' level that contributed to a PM-10 exceedance at South Phoenix; in contrast, Wednesday's system is currently advertised to have 45 mph winds at that level.
