Synopsis and Discussion
A PM-10 HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 22
A massive ridge aloft will build over the west coast the next few days
with strong surface high pressure building over the Great Basin.
Multiple weather forecast products are indicating that the arrival of a
"back-door" cold front on Tuesday will lead to a very breezy to windy
northeast to easterly wind regime over the local forecast area by
mid-morning. Since sustained winds just above the surface of up to 30
mph are advertised to occur into the early afternoon hours, areas of
blowing dust are a distinct possibility by then. Although this type of
weather scenario happens infrequently, the most recent similar situation
occurring on October 22, 2008, contributed to unhealthy PM-10 (coarse
particle) levels over the northwest Valley. Also, since no significant
rainfall has occurred for several weeks and afternoon temperatures
during that period have been mostly near or above 100 degrees F, local
soils have had ample opportunity to dry out. Thus, a PM-10 Health Watch
has been issued for Tuesday. Otherwise, overall good air quality is
expected the next few days
