Synopsis and Discussion
Latest AMDAR soundings from Sky Harbor Airport and profiler data from Williams Gateway Airport show an easterly wind regime from the surface to around 3K'. Noon surface wind reports from around the Valley show a light east to southerly component at most locations. Was this the case in July or August, 8-hour ozone exceedances in the metro area would almost surely follow. However, this late in the season with the sun angle much lower and the day length much shorter, only a modest increase in ozone levels is anticipated to occur today and again on Friday. As of 10:00 a.m. locations such as West Phoenix, Glendale, Central Phoenix, and South Scottsdale all had hourly reading 10-25 parts per billion higher than 24 hours ago. Meanwhile, instability associated with a weak upper level low over eastern AZ has produced a nice batch of thunderstorms over Gila County. Later on today some of these may form close enough to the Valley to impact the area with outflow boundaries and areas of blowing dust by this evening, with a repeat performance possible on Friday. Even so, highest levels of PM-10 (coarse particles) are not expected to reach above the mid-moderate range of the Air Quality Index.
