Synopsis and Discussion
Weak overnight inversion formation again contributed to some elevated hourly PM-10 (coarse particle) readings this a.m. with the South Phoenix, Durango, and West Forty Third monitoring sites yielding peak concentrations from 124.0 to 171.4ug/m3 between 6:00 and 7:00 a.m. Meanwhile, local ozone levels remained extremely low for the second consecutive day. An approaching weather feature may bring modestly higher concentrations of both pollutants beginning on Thursday, however. The track of a weak upper level low over eastern AZ will bring a chance for thunderstorms to the higher terrain on the Valley periphery today thru Friday. As a result, there will be the potential for gusty down-slope outflow winds at times - mainly over the east metro area - and the possibility of areas of blowing dust. The lingering characteristics of said outflow boundaries - along with a weak to easterly low-level wind regime - may also increase both ozone production and accumulation. Even so, highest levels of both pollutants are not expected to reach above the mid-moderate range of the Air Quality Index.
