Synopsis and Discussion
*TODAY'S OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN EXTENDED THRU WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 02*
Another thunderstorm complex outflow boundary-generated dust storm moved thru most of the metro area between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. Monday evening. An exceedance of the PM-10 (coarse particle) standard was narrowly averted with hourly concentrations as high as 1,999.5ug/m3 at Higley. Meanwhile, local ozone levels are poised to approach unhealthy levels by late this afternoon and likely do so if winds remain relatively light as expected. Since 1996 local 8-hour ozone levels have reached the 76 parts per billion level during September 24 times - the latest being on September 8 2007. Although afternoon temperatures can still be very hot this month, the loss of over 15 degrees of sun elevation and over 90 minutes of day-length since mid-June tends to work against extremely high ozone production. Even so, since under the current easterly wind regime ozone accumulation can sustain elevated ozone levels, today's Health Watch has been extended thru Wednesday.
