Synopsis and Discussion
A very cold air mass remains over the region, but the deep upper trough responsible will be moving to the east the next few days. In its place a very strong ridge aloft will build over AZ from the west. Forecast products are advertising that between this morning and Friday afternoon temperatures over the Valley will increase by an astounding 27 deg F at the 10K' level and 14+deg F at the 5K' level. Meanwhile, only a four-degree F increase is forecast at ground level. By Saturday afternoon this jumps to 32 deg F at the 10K' level, 27 deg F at the 5K' level, and 15 deg F at the surface. With northerly gradient winds generally on the decrease after Friday and morning inversions getting stronger each day, it appears that a stagnant air mass will become established over the metro area by this weekend and continue into the early part of next week. Particle pollution levels will likely be on the increase as early as Friday, but due to less activity during the weekend, any further rise will probably be delayed until Monday. However, if wood-burning fireplaces are utilized extensively, expect elevated PM levels thru the weekend. -Reith
