Synopsis and Discussion
Rather poor visibilities over the Valley this a.m. are quite apparent
per VISNET apparatus; see http://www.phoenixvis.net/. This is due to
residual suspended dust stirred up locally and transported in regionally
on Sunday by gusty winds associated with the arrival of a large upper
level trough in the mid-latitude storm track. Despite appearances,
PM-10 (coarse particle) levels were not very high thru 8:00 a.m., with
seven monitoring sites indicating hourly readings only in the
40-113ug/m3 range. Also, local AMDAR sounding data indicates the absence
of a surface-based inversion but relatively light near-surface winds for
the time being. Southwesterly winds increasing by early afternoon will
help disperse the particles. The aforementioned large and strong upper
level trough - currently over the entire western half of the U.S. - will
separate into two sections by Tuesday morning. The southern portion
will gather strength and move toward AZ again on Wednesday. As a
result, very breezy conditions are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday
with a slight chance for showers on Wednesday and Thursday
