Synopsis and Discussion
Two systems are closing in on Arizona this weekend, offering completely different weather. A tropical system off the coast of Baja has slowly been working its way north towards the region. It's carrying a modest amount of moisture that would be very beneficial to the deserts given the lack of rain we've received this Monsoon Season. The other feature looming is a large trough of low pressure moving down from the Pacific Northwest. This system will bring windy, cooler and much drier air to the region. Yesterday's model runs were optimistic that the tropical system would get close enough to Arizona to drop some good rain across the southern half of Arizona. The speed of the Pacific Northwest system, however, has now changed the models' position, suggesting that most of the moisture will be held south of the Arizona border with just the southeastern corner of the State expected to receive any measurable rain. Under this scenario, winds will begin to increase late Saturday night out of the southwest, peaking Sunday afternoon, and tailing off by midday Monday. Though there may be intermittent clouds Sunday, the influx of dry air will likely evaporate any rain trying to reach the ground. Some areas may experience periods of blowing dust which would result in elevated PM-10 concentrations. Afternoon desert temperatures will struggle to reach the mid 80s Monday through Wednesday of next week.
Check back on Sunday for the latest. Until then, have a great weekend!
