Synopsis and Discussion
*A PM-2.5 HEALTH WATCH WILL REMAIN IN EFFECT THRU MIDNIGHT*
By 10:00 a.m. this morning northeast to easterly winds aloft had been able to break thru yet another strong (6-7 deg C) inversion that formed overnight, helping to temporarily increase dispersion and improve visibilities. These winds are the result of tightening low-level gradients as high pressure builds over the southern Rockies. However, another round of rather high hourly PM-10 (coarse particle) readings occurred between 6:00 and 8:00 a.m. peaking at 176.5ug/m3 at the West Forty Third monitoring site, 184.8ug/m3 at Durango, and 210.6ug/m3 at Higley. Even gustier winds are advertised for Thanksgiving morning, which should help to dissipate particle pollution emissions that are likely to accumulate overnight; thus, the PM-2.5 Health Watch will not be extended. Overnight inversion formation and warm air aloft will keep the air mass over the metro area pretty stagnant thru Friday, but a weather pattern change is on the horizon in the form of an approaching trough on Saturday. Much cooler and breezy to windy weather is possible by late in the weekend but no rain is expected. -Reith
