Synopsis and Discussion
A trough of low pressure currently sits off the coast of southern California and will begin to move on shore later today. It is responsible for the cloud cover across much of Arizona Thursday. The associated front is now forecast to move through our forecast area around noon on Friday, about 18 hours later than originally calculated. Though it will increase winds in the high country of northern and eastern Arizona Friday, conditions will only be breezy at best across the deserts. Nevertheless, these breezes should be enough to help disperse some of this accumulated pollution which includes dust, vehicle emissions and wood smoke from residential burning to name a few. There is an outside chance of a stray desert shower or two late Friday into Saturday as the system continues east through the region. The biggest change, however, will be the much cooler temperatures. Record and near-record heat of 91 and 90°F on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, will be replaced with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s Saturday through next Monday. Cooler temperatures generally mean an increase in residential wood burning activities. Thus, PM-2.5 concentrations are expected to quickly rebound into the mid "Moderate" range by Sunday.
Check back tomorrow for the latest on this weekend's weather and air quality. Until then, have a good day! -J.Paul
