Synopsis and Discussion
Air mass stagnation and overnight inversion formation are again taking their toll on Valley air quality and area visibilities this a.m. by contributing to high hourly particle pollutant concentrations. Highest PM-10 readings from around the metro area included 103.9ug/m3 at the Higley monitoring site, 122.0ug/m3 at West Phoenix, 213.4ug/m3 at West Forty Third, 274.0ug/m3 at Durango, and an extremely high 618.5ug/m3 at South Phoenix. Fortunately, a synoptic weather pattern change will occur over the southwest U.S. during the next 48 hours. A large but mostly dry Pacific trough in the mid-latitude storm track will move slowly toward the metro area on Wednesday, arrive overhead along with a surface cold front late Thursday, and then linger over AZ on Friday. Strongest winds with this system are expected to occur on Thursday afternoon and there is the potential for some blowing dust. However, middle and high-level cloud cover will bring nearly overcast conditions both Thursday and Friday which will tend to keep wind speeds below their potential by inhibiting vertical mixing. In any case, in deference to the parched and disturbed soil conditions, and in light of such high PM-10 readings of late, a PM-10 Health Watch may be issued. -Reith
