Synopsis and Discussion
Another stagnant day in progress out there, augmented by the overnight formation of a strong (6-7 deg C) surface-based radiation inversion (see http://www.phoenixvis.net/. This, along with higher weekday PM-10 (coarse particle) emissions, has resulted in some elevated hourly readings this a.m. - including 104.3ug/m3 at the West Phoenix monitoring site, 144.8.0ug/m3 at Greenwood, 150.4ug/m3 at West Forty Third, and 156.0ug/m3 at Durango. Fortunately, although a strong upper level ridge will remain over AZ thru Tuesday with rather stagnant air mass conditions continuing, a synoptic weather pattern change is on the horizon. By Wednesday a large Pacific trough in the mid-latitude storm will move slowly toward the local forecast area with an increase in afternoon winds helping out with dispersion. Strong and gusty winds are possible on Thursday; even though this will increase the potential for some afternoon blowing dust, a major dust event does not look likely at this point. -Reith
