Synopsis and Discussion
Per Sky Harbor AMDAR sounding data the strongest surface-based radiation inversion of the season thus far - 9.7 deg C/17.5 deg F - formed overnight and of this writing was on the verge of breaking over the Valley. This inversion contributed to another round of high hourly PM-10 (coarse particle) levels this a.m. that included 187.9ug/m3 at the West Forty Third monitoring site, 181.8ug/m3 at Durango, 165.8ug/m3 at Higley, 125.7ug/m3 at Greenwood, 98.0ug/m3 at Buckeye, and 96.1ug/m3 at West Phoenix. The best calculated mixing depth today is near 4800' so hourly concentrations will drop quite a bit by afternoon but then rebound again around sunset. With a warm ridge and stagnant air mass overhead, this situation will likely repeat itself thru Friday. Slightly higher afternoon particle matter readings are possible on Wednesday as increasing high cloudiness impedes daytime heating a bit while decreasing vertical mixing. A weak upper level trough will approach the area on Saturday and higher afternoon winds and better dispersion are possible then. -Reith
