Synopsis and Discussion

AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT TODAY

Wednesday was another locally "down" day ozone-wise as the anticipated partial easterly wind component failed to hold against a strong upslope westerly component; however, early indications are that ozone concentrations today will be significantly higher. One reason is that the modest (20-30 mph) outflow boundary from thunderstorm activity north and northeast of the Valley that occurred between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. had a strong potential to "prime" the local atmosphere with additional ozone precursors in the form of biogenic VOCs. Another reason is that an 11:00 a.m. AMDAR sounding indicated that a weak northeast to easterly wind regime was over the metro area from the surface to over 20K'. At 10:00 a.m. all hourly ozone levels but one from the local monitoring network ranged from 51 parts per billion to 61 ppb; at that time North Phoenix displayed an hourly jump of 18ppb and West Phoenix had a 12ppb increase. Even though debris clouds and gusty outflow winds may impinge upon the Valley again by late afternoon, today's Ozone Health Watch will remain in effect.
