Synopsis and Discussion
AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR WEDNESDAY MAY 27
An increase in local ozone levels is possible by Wednesday afternoon.
The weak and rather chaotic flow aloft over the western U.S. today will
give way to a strong ridge building over the Great Basin & northern
Rockies on Wednesday & Thursday. This situation is similar to the one
that occurred early last week that resulted in a deep easterly wind
regime and unhealthy ozone concentrations. However, the upper level
high center is in this instance is forecast to remain north of AZ while
undercutting flow over AZ is advertised by forecast models to include a
weak low somewhere in the vicinity. Even so, if the east to
southeasterly wind component - shown being imparted to the 7K' level and
above over the metro area by Wednesday afternoon verifies - ozone
accumulation should increase. Under full May sunshine and afternoon
temperatures returning to the 100-degree F mark, ozone production should
trend upward as well; thus, an Ozone Health Watch has been issued for
Wednesday. -Reith
