Synopsis and Discussion
On and off showers will continue throughout the day on Friday as the
cutoff area of low pressure continues to spin over Arizona. Believe it
or not, May is supposed to be the driest month for Phoenix, and we've
seen almost a half an inch of rain in some parts of the northeast Valley
such as Paradise Valley and Scottsdale. Other spots have generally
collected about 0.20 inches in the past 24 hours while Sky Harbor
Airport (the official rain gauge of Phoenix) is sitting around a quarter
of an inch. We'll take all we can get as Phoenix is about 1.3 inches
below normal for this time of year.
The clouds and rain have been great in shutting down all pollution.
Ozone and particulate concentrations were all in the "Good" range on
Thursday and should remain there through Friday. Clouds will be on the
decrease late Saturday and skies will be mostly sunny on Sunday with
afternoon desert temps rebounding to the upper 90s by then. It'll be a
while before we see particulates climb back into the "Moderate" range,
but Ozone will be there much sooner, possibly as early as Saturday
afternoon in some of the higher elevations to the northeast of the
Valley. Check back on Sunday for a look at you Memorial Day weather and
air quality. Until then, have a great weekend! -J.Paul
