Synopsis and Discussion
AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR LATE THIS AFTERNOON AND
EVENING
As mentioned yesterday, winds aloft have become conducive for the
transport of additional ozone and its precursors from CA to AZ and
streamline analyses indicate that this situation will continue thru this
afternoon. Upwind ozone monitors at Yuma (in Yuma County) and Alamo Lake
(in La Paz County) both registered impressive jumps in ozone levels -
from 38 AQI and 43 AQI, respectively, on Monday to 87 AQI at both
locations on Tuesday. Apparently this plume has reached the metro area
as well; local hourly concentrations at 10:00 a.m. at many locations
were running 10-15 parts per billion higher than 24 hours ago. In
addition, hourly increases of 10-20ppb occurred at several sites between
9:00 and 10:00 a.m. As a result, an Ozone Health Watch has been issued
for this afternoon and evening, mainly over the northeast and east
Valley since afternoon surface winds will carry the plume in those
directions. Still looks like a multi-day high ozone episode is possible
beginning on Friday as afternoon prevailing winds drop off and then
become easterly. A similar situation that began on May 17 2007
contributed to ozone standard-adjusted AQI levels of over 110. -Reith
