Synopsis and Discussion
*AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR FRIDAY, MAY 8, 2009*
The worst may be over as far as ozone levels go... for now. For the second day in a row, Tonto National Monument got very close to exceeding the federal health standard. Current ozone concentrations across the Valley are very similar to what they were 24 hours earlier. That means levels will likely threaten that health standard once again. Thus, an Ozone Health Watch remains in effect for Friday.
There is a minor upper-level disturbance that will sweep through the northern part of the state on Saturday. This will turn the flow out of the south while producing some breezy conditions across the deserts. It's possible to see a few gusts above 20 mph at times. The southerly flow will push the lingering ozone and precursors north of the Valley with little to no influx of new precursors. This will lead to lower concentrations on Saturday. High pressure will quickly regain control on Mother's Day Sunday. Clear skies, relatively light winds and afternoon temperatures around 100-103°F can be expected through much of next week. Check back on Sunday for the latest on the coming week's weather and associated air quality. Until then, have a great weekend and a happy Mother's Day! -J.Paul
