Synopsis and Discussion
TODAY'S OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN EXTENDED THRU TUESDAY MAY 05
The current air quality forecasting challenge is timing the return of
high ozone levels to the Valley. Factors favoring such a return include
afternoon temperatures that will be trending upward to over 100 degrees
F no later than Wednesday, along with a return to mostly sunny skies and
decreasing winds - again by Wednesday. The wild card is additional
ozone and precursor transport from California. A recent look at ozone
monitoring data from Imperial, San Bernardino, and Riverside counties
reveal that O3 levels at most sites are lower than those of last week,
but much higher at some sites than those of yesterday. Also,
concentrations of the precursor NOx were substantially higher at most
locations than those of Sunday. Forecast models indicate that winds in
the in the 5-10K' layer between AZ and CA will remain conducive to the
channeling of both toward the Phoenix area the next few days. Thus,
even though local ozone levels are currently running below average this
a.m., the existing Ozone Health Watch has been extended thru Tuesday.
