Synopsis and Discussion

TODAY'S OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN EXTENDED THRU TUESDAY JUNE 30
The summer monsoon circulation pattern is in full-swing, and is expected to continue for the next several days. Low-level (5K') gradient winds are advertised to remain westerly for the foreseeable future, which tends to fend off unhealthy levels of ozone accumulation. However, easterly outflow boundaries from monsoon storms frequently precede high local ozone levels, and westerly gradient winds in these situations usually confine the subsequent unhealthy ozone concentrations to locations such as Apache Junction and Queen Valley. There is just a slight chance for an outflow boundary this evening, so the existing Ozone Health Watch has been extended thru Tuesday. Increasing moisture and easterly steering winds on Tuesday will improve the chances for storms to move off the higher terrain toward the metro area. Therefore, unless residual cloud cover intervenes, there appears to be a high potential for unhealthy ozone levels over the east Valley on Wednesday and a High Pollution Advisory may be necessary. There is also a higher risk of dense blowing dust by Tuesday evening.
