Health message for Friday, June 26: Unusually sensitive people should consider reducing prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors.

Synopsis and Discussion
Before the onset of gusty westerly surface winds after 2:00 p.m., local hourly ozone concentrations ramped up quickly on Wednesday...reaching 80+ parts per billion at the West Chandler, Falcon Field, and Fountain Hills monitoring sites at that hour. Ultimately, said winds to 25 mph tore apart much of the metro ozone plume but not before the hourly concentration at Apache Junction reached 91ppb at 4:00 p.m. - the first 90+ hourly reading of the season; five other sites were in the 81-89ppb range. On the plus side, ozone production today over the Valley is very low due to thick cloud cover associated with a significant influx of summer monsoon moisture from Mexico. It should be an active storm period thru Friday followed by some drying on Saturday as a weak trough moves by to the north. Under these circumstances, local ozone levels should remain well below their potential. There is still the potential for storms over southeast AZ to propagate toward the Valley by late this afternoon and produce gusty outflow winds & dense blowing dust.
