Synopsis and Discussion
Several factors are coming together that should impact local ozone levels in a negative (upward) fashion. The upper level trough that has been overhead for several weeks is forecast to be shunted to the west by Tuesday as a westward extension of the Bermuda High approaches. As a result, low-level southwesterly gradients are advertised to become southerly and weaken thru Wednesday with even a periodic southeasterly component at times. No significant cloud cover will be present thru Wednesday and daytime high temperatures will exceed 105 degrees F each day. There is the potential for an outflow boundary to reach the metro area from the east as early as Tuesday evening, an event that usually precedes spikes in local ozone concentrations by 24 hours. Of course, Ozone 2009 has been anything but a typical season thus far, so will amend forecast accordingly if the aforementioned factors do not yield the normally predictable results.
