Synopsis and Discussion
Daily weather charts continue to show an upper level low and trough situated to the west of AZ. These features are forecast to shift southward by Thursday, resulting in a more moist southerly flow. This early summer monsoon moisture, acted upon by the upper level low and strong daytime heating, will bring a chance for thunderstorms to the higher terrain bordering the metro area on Thursday afternoon, and to the Valley proper on Friday. Gusty outflow winds from storms that do develop are a certainty, so an increased risk for brief periods of dense blowing dust by the early evening hours will accompany this weather change. Thursday looks like an up day for ozone levels due to mostly sunny skies and a drop in daytime wind speeds. Extensive cloud cover looks possible on Friday; if so, ozone levels will decrease once again. Long-range forecast models indicate that a large trough will become re-established over the western U.S. from Sunday thru at least Wednesday of next week.
