Synopsis and Discussion
A modest intrusion of ozone and/or its precursors from CA evidently occurred over western AZ on Wednesday with much higher readings of that pollutant at the Yuma monitoring site (in Yuma County) and a smaller but noticeable increase at the Alamo Lake site (in La Paz County). This push appears to have reached the local forecast area as well; as of 10:00 a.m. hourly ozone concentrations are from five parts per billion higher than 24 hours ago at West Phoenix & Tempe to 15 ppb higher at North Phoenix and Pinnacle Peak. However, since streamline charts in the 5-10K' layer show an increasingly southerly flow over the Valley today, and since surface winds at the Chandler Airport noon were already gusting to 26 mph from the south at noon, do not believe this transport plume will be sustained. Synoptic charts indicate that very little change in the large-scale weather pattern will occur over AZ thru the weekend with a long-wave upper level trough anchored over the eastern Pacific/western U.S. Gusty afternoon winds, much below average daytime temperatures, and periodic cloud cover are expected to keep ozone production and accumulation far below its potential for this time of year; overall good air quality is forecast to continue thru at least Saturday.
